To our families, communities, friends, local and global, March 21 marks the worldwide recognition of Down syndrome. The day was recognized on March 21, 2006 and was selected to signify the uniqueness of Trisomy 21, where a triplication of the chromosome is present.
Awareness abounds globally through pictures, essays, cinema, books, and the most powerful symbolization, mismatched socks. The colorful socks are worn to signify how diverse our community is, and how the realization of Down syndrome continues to be an important fabric of society.
Recently, television shows, such as ‘Born this Way’, movies, ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ and shorts have highlighted the many talents of our community. Born This Way offered a glimpse of several Down syndrome young adults as they tackled life, realized their dreams, went to college, became a musician, or opened their own clothing business. There are no limitations. Actors, coffee shop owners, a young businessman who has a sock business to boost awareness, are all real-life examples of their success.
As a father of a child with Down syndrome, my family has been blessed with a sassy, intelligent, persistent, funny, and goal driven daughter. To watch her succeed has been heartwarming and joyful
Let us embrace this day and celebrate our successes, our diversity, and the love that brings us all together.
